» CHARACTER INFORMATION
Character NAME: Satero e Ankhar
Character PULL-POINT: Shortly after killing Soothe (see end of History)
Character AGE: ~800. Looks like he's in his mid-30s.
Character ABILITIES: Satero is 6'7" and almost 300 pounds of muscle. Physically, he's already pretty damn strong. Add in his sharpened teeth and his occasional tendency to try biting people's faces off and, well, Satero becomes an even worse problem.

He is also what his world once called a "chasm", someone who acts as a magical black hole. Any magic cast at him or within a 20-ft radius of him gets redirected and absorbed harmlessly into his body, regardless of whether or not he was even targeted. This seems to be an innate ability that Satero has no control over: he can't switch it on or off, and he can't shrink or expand the range of effectiveness.

He is also subject to a few things that aren't exactly abilities, but certainly aren't normal:

  • His missing left eye occasionally starts bleeding for no reason. It starts and stops on its own. This causes him no pain.

  • He frequently starts spitting out bloody teeth, only to find that none of his own are actually missing, or even loose.

  • He has a habit of self-mutilation, most often by chewing on his fingers, frequently to the point of amputation due to his sharp teeth. In the case of amputation, his fingers grow back in the blink of an eye.

(Should note that FINGER REGENERATION and the rest of the above aside, while in Exsilium he'll suffer from sickness and injuries just the same as a normal human)

(Satero will not have the below ability in Exsilium, as it's pretty much godmodding by nature. But he will not realize right away that he's lost this ability, so he may act as if he still has it.)

In his own world Satero gained the ability to skew reality to his favor -- in other words, Satero had impossibly good luck. He was never lacking in money, he always drew the winning lottery number, and he always won Russian rouleutte. Even when he put the gun to his head and pulled the trigger six times. Which later proved to be a great problem for Satero, as he found that he could not commit suicide. He would miraculously survive 20-story jumps, be unaffected by drug overdose, and be caught by well-meaning friends before he could slit his wrists and bleed to death. No matter what he did the universe seemed set on preventing his death, to the point of statistical absurdity.

Character HISTORY:
(Satero comes from a canonical AU of the story that Bariyan comes from, but I'll address their relationship in Exsilium at the end of the app)

Satero was singled out early in life for being a chasm, and the church kept a close eye on him in order to monitor his development. However, he grew up free-willed, violent, and unruly, and when asked to join the church he refused. As a result, they exiled him from the country before he could become a true threat to the church mages.

So Satero fled from his homeland of Sachra into the neighboring desert city of Kharta, where he was allowed to stay on the condition that he let some of their mages study him. This seemed like a small enough sacrifice for asylum, so Satero agreed and made Kharta his home.

Years later another band of Sachran exiles came into Kharta: the remains of a mercenary company, headed by Corosa e Ankhar. As a fellow Sachran, Satero felt obligated to help acclimate them to the city, but quickly befriended Corosa and the rest of the company and established a close relationship with them.

He was especially close to Corosa, to the point where Corosa would eventually call Satero his closest confidante. But Satero fell in love with Corosa, who did not reciprocate those emotions. So it was here that Satero began to exhibit his worse half: his tendency towards obsession, jealousy, and violence.

Their relationship worsened, which was not helped by increasing external tensions. Things came to a head when Corosa's fraying relationship with Bariyan broke entirely. That divide pushed Corosa away from the one person who had honestly cared for him, and gave Satero the opportunity the establish himself as the only person who would care. So despite Satero's increasingly violent personality, Corosa stuck by him anyway, unable to see past the fear of losing another 'friend'.

This was eventually eclipsed by an absolute and all-consuming fear of Satero himself, whom had grown downright abusive. After too much time spent together, Corosa finally broke off and ran away, only to be chased halfway across the continent by Satero. Once caught, Satero acted out in hurt and rage: he blinded Corosa by taking out both his eyes, and essentially killed him by chaining him to some anchors and throwing him overboard into the middle of the ocean. This was done knowing full well that Corosa was immortal and that he could not die, that he resurrected upon every death. Knowing that Corosa would likely be trapped in this cycle forever while trapped at the bottom of the sea.

However, shortly after throwing Corosa overboard, Satero a) became immortal and b) started to experience his reality-skewing good fortune (as described in his abilities section). The only explanation that anyone could offer up for this was that the universe had decided to treat Corosa's "death" as a sacrifice, and granted Satero his powers in exchange.

Satero spent most of his long life simply wandering aimlessly, looking for fights, looking for wars. But as the years passed, his sanity decayed quickly -- eaten away by the guilt and anger that would not leave him, and by his own self-loathing. His increasingly unstable and violent personality prevented him from making or keeping friends. The few who did stay by him did so only out of fear. But even they had abandoned him by the time the modern day rolled around, leaving Satero entirely to his own devices.

As a result, there was no one around to stop Satero from stabbing his right eye out in a fit of paranoia. That action triggered the beginning of many strange happenings (listed under "Abilities"), for which there were no explanations. They only served to further Satero's terror and madness, and convinced him that there was something out there that loved him not. Only a mysterious 'something', though -- while deep down, Satero may have expected that it was Corosa, he refused to acknowledge that Corosa had ever existed.

However, he was forced to acknowledge Corosa's existence at least briefly when he heard that a fellow immortal named Soothe was looking into ways of rescuing Corosa and bringing him back to the surface. Satero was so utterly terrified by this idea that he tracked Soothe down and killed her by smashing the back of her head in with a crowbar. That done, he proceeded to disappear again.

Character PERSONALITY:
At times, Satero acts like a completely normal person. He can be polite, hold a civil conversation, make small talk about the weather. Sometimes he can be happy and friendly and cheerful. Sometimes he can be downright charismatic. These are Satero's moments of complete clarity.

They are very rare.

More often he can be a paranoid red-eyed twitching mess, staring you down while he chews his own fingers off.

Satero is, in short, highly inconsistent. It is usually safe to assume that he is going to be cranky, miserable, and impossible to reason with. More often than not Satero can be found wandering around in a perpetually disoriented state, suspicious and hostile towards everything, easily distracted by both external happenings and by his own thoughts and fears. As a result, he is not particularly observant and can react slowly to danger -- or not react at all.

That is when Satero is at his best -- unapproachable, unhinged, but relatively harmless.

At his worst, Satero is destructive. He throws tantrums. He vandalizes his surroundings. And he attacks people without reason. It is hard to predict when he will do so because he will fly into rages at the drop of a pin. However, he is certain to turn violent if angered, and likely to turn violent if frustrated. Unfortunately, the things that anger and frustrate Satero are also constantly changing and just as inconsistent as the rest of him.

And, to his own bemusement, Satero is occasionally inclined towards unprompted mercy and random acts of kindness.

Satero is convinced that nearly everything is out to "get him", though he would be unable to articulate what that would actually entail. But he spends so much time consumed by this paranoia that it, combined with his anger, have become a deeply ingrained part of him. But being paranoid and angry is no way to achieve happiness, so Satero remains eternally unhappy.

He has been trapped in a vicious cycle for the greater part of his life. Satero's hatred of himself leads him to believe that everyone else is much better person than him, and that he deserves no one. This causes him to hate himself even more, and to hate others around him just as much as he loves them. He wants to be worthy of others, but can never see himself as such, and can never change himself to rise above his self-loathing. So instead, he chooses to drag the rest of the world down to his level -- by attacking them, provoking them, hoping that they will weaken and corrupt to his level.

This is almost guaranteed to happen to anyone who becomes close to him. Satero has a deeply ingrained tendency to destroy the things he loves.

With the sole exception of children and animals. Some part of Satero remains just barely lucid enough to spare those. In fact, Satero is downright gentle with animals, especially dogs. And while he may not tone down the disturbing aspects of his personality around children, he is at least capable of restraining himself from causing them any physical harm. In certain cases Satero can even become protective of them, almost affectionate. But in these cases he is also guaranteed to vanish from their lives as they grow older, more capable, and independent.

» EXSILIUM INFORMATION
Chosen WEAPON: Satero came into Exsilium with a crowbar. It's already pretty bloody. He's gonna keep that anyway.
Chosen SKILLSET: We got ourselves a fighter here. Fighting's about the only thing Satero can do, though there might be problems keeping him from fighting other members of the Initiative or, er, himself.

Third PERSON:
"Satero!"

"What?"

"Fucking hell, you-- I-- where the fuck are you?"

"I don't know." Satero shrugs, as if Mukhari can see him.

"Then figure it out! You need to get back here, man, come on, you shouldn't be--"

Mukhari is still yelling into the phone when Satero takes it away from his ear, looks at it in confusion, and casually tosses it over his shoulder. His white shirt gets flecked with blood as he does so and he pauses again, this time to look at his hands and wonder when they got so dirty. Blood and gore under his fingernails. He sees feathers sticking to his palm. Splinters of bone. Yes, he remembers now. The remains of his last meal. Satero picks the bones out of the dried blood and flicks them away.

He shudders as a coldness settles over him and he looks around. Green grass, bright in the summer warmth. Behind him the highway is roaring with the unnatural screeches of too many cars and it makes Satero's head hurt, so he clutches at his temples and snaps his teeth together and tastes blood as he bites down on his lip. Blood tastes like nothing to him now. No no no no no. He doesn't know where he is but he knows why he is here and he needs to get away. He has to go. He has to run and he has to run far and he has so much distance to put behind himself and-- and something.

Something is after him.

(Satero doesn't know what. Three days prior he'd showed up at Mukhari's door and Mukhari had let him in. Satero slept for two days straight and woke up on the third morning in terror, certain that something had been watching him -- that someone had been in the room, and had only just left. But he knew that they would be coming back. He knew that they would always come back and that one day, they would find him. And that he could not fight it. That he did not want to.

So he ran.)

Satero stumbles forwards. Ahead of him the telephone towers duplicate themselves into the distance, as far as the eye can see. Their tops fading away into the bright blue haze of cloud and sky, so high that it makes Satero feel sick. He keeps his eyes to the ground and he wipes his hands clean off on his jeans and he runs.

» ADDITIONAL NOTES
Satero here is being app'd from an AU of Bariyan's same story (which canonically happens through timetravel shenanigans leading to multiple timelines/universes). They know each other in both versions but I think I should be able to avoid having to play them against each other: in his story, Satero barely remembers Bariyan (and also thinks that Bariyan is long dead) and probably wouldn't even recognize Bariyan if they came face-to-face. Meanwhile Bariyan is not very observant of the network, so he'll just miss Satero's presence there completely, and I can just assume that Bariyan happily never notices Satero in person.
